  • For the first time in its history, Coca-Cola is changing its red cans to white to draw attention to threats faced by Arctic polar bears, raise funds to support World Wildlife Fund's conservation efforts to protect them, and to engage people to support them in this initiative.
  • Coca-Cola is donating $2 million to WWF's Arctic conservation program, and will match all consumer donations up to a total of $1 million.
  • The initiative,"Arctic Home," builds upon the organizations' global partnership to conserve priority river basins around the world and integrate sustainability into the company's operations worldwide.

  • Current mismanagement of natural assets is costing the global economy today around $6.6 trillion a year—the equivalent of 11% of global gross domestic product.

  • The Presidents of the Republics of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe signed a Treaty which formally and legally establishes the 404,000 square kilometer Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA).
  • They aim to ensure that the natural resources they share across their international boundaries are conserved and managed prudently for present and future generations within the context of sustainable development.
  • The treaty creates an international organization with specific legal authorities to govern the TFCA and ensure the goals of the treaty are realized.

  • Thai think tank has proposed that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issue "forest bonds" to raise funds for managing the country's natural assets.
  • Projects for natural resource management, such as renewable energy facilities and forest restoration, will increase the natural wealth of the nation and can provide commercial profits to investors.
  • A mechanism to protect forest reserves will reduce capital loss due to flash floods, landslides, and displaced eco-tourism businesses.

  • Natural resource programs formed by public and private partnerships utilize wildlife so that it remains a sustainable resource for their community.
  • International hunting by 18,500 hunters generates $200 million USD annually in remote rural areas of Africa in 23 countries. Private hunting operations conserve wildlife on 540,000 square miles, which is 22% more land mass than is found in all the national parks of Africa.
  • Creating an incentive to coexist with wildlife has been a central reason why so many populations of species are now a thriving investment in our biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Vodacom Foundation Brings Non-Profits and Government Together to Save Wild Dogs PDF Print E-mail

  • The Vodacom Foundation is supporting the Serengeti Wild Dogs Conservation Project, an excellent example of corporate-backed public-private partnerships at work.
  • They are collaborating with the government and Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute to bring wild dogs, which have been nearly extinct since 1993, back to the Serengeti.
  • Wild dogs are an important part of the vibrant Serengeti ecotourism landscape. Monitoring their behavior and education programs will create new jobs in Tanzania.
  • The Serengeti Wild Dogs Conservation Project is part of Vodacom's larger ethos of empowering and improving the communities in which it does business.
